GCSE Drama trip to Glasgow. Saturday 6th – Sunday 7th February 2010
Year 11 & 12 GCSE Drama students arose for the 5am start on our weekend away; Mrs Bell breathed a sign of relief as we all sat down onboard the Stena Caledonia travelling to the Scottish city of Glasgow for a relaxing weekend away.
Mr Fleming gave us the local tour on our journey up through the Scottish coastline showing us the Ailsa Craig and the Highland cattle while Ms Mc Callan fell asleep (again!); after our lunchtime arrival and check in at the modern Premier Inn we made our way to the popular shopping districts of Sauchiehall Street and the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre, where we all spent the afternoon shopping and taking a moment to watch the street theatre performances.
After our evening meal and a chance to ‘doll ourselves up’ we headed round the corner to the King’s Theatre where we eagerly waited for the performance of ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell to begin. We laughed, we frowned, we cried as we saw the professional actors from London’s West End perform the story that we have been studying for our GCSE Exam. It was magnificent, and after Mrs Bell and Mr Fleming wiped their tears away we all happily returned to our hotel and went to sleep (at some point during the night!)
On Sunday after a well deserved lye-in we made our way to breakfast and the ‘all-you-can-eat’ service and we didn’t leave a single rasher of bacon. After packing and yet more photos for Mrs Bell (she was obsessed) we boarded the coach and started our return journey home, stopping off for a rest and to take in some more of the friendly Scottish air.
We returned home by 11pm but it was a wonderful experience and a fun weekend away. Back to Drama lessons though, and now we have to remember to use what we saw onstage both in the practical and theory units and already we can see how beneficial see the professional play was.
