Drumragh Integrated College

Together with Omagh Integrated Primary School we provide Integrated Education from age four to nineteen years.

Omagh Integrated Campus is an exciting partnership between Omagh Integrated Primary School & Nursery and Drumragh Integrated College. We provide quality integrated education for over 1000 children and young people, from pre-school provision to A levels. Our two schools share close links, one site, strong educational values and a vision for the future of integrated education, within and beyond the Omagh area. We also believe in a better future for Northern Ireland.

In a society that is scarred and struggling toward real peace, it seems completely obvious that young people should be educated together – all day, every day. A central goal of integrated education is the transformation of young people’s hearts and minds. This is achieved by actively helping them to respect difference and encouraging them to form friendships that break down barriers. And so we can shape a future that includes tolerance, peace and healing.

Omagh Integrated Campus is the only Integrated Education Campus in Northern Ireland.

The OIC vision includes these qualities:

  • A standard of education that is second to none
  • A caring and child-centred ethos
  • Mutual respect
  • A learning community
  • Academic excellence
  • The transformation of young people’s values
  • Encouraging children and teenagers to respect themselves and live confidently
  • The creation of a more peaceful, positive society

Both Omagh Integrated Primary School and Drumragh Integrated College were launched by groups of determined, pioneering parents. The story of integrated education in Northern Ireland is an inspiring one, and it’s not over yet.

Omagh Integrated Primary School opened in 1990, under the leadership of Mrs Maureen Butler, with 32 pupils in years 1 to 7 and 24 in nursery. The school has grown impressively in both strength and numbers, reaching an enrolment of 200 in 1999 and 300 in 2007.  It endured its challenging mobile accommodation brilliantly, offering a clear reminder that the heart of a great school is its people, not its buildings. OIPS celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 and moved into its new site in 2018, finally joining Drumragh to form Omagh Integrated Campus!

Drumragh Integrated College opened in 1995, gradually taking over more and more of a Victorian psychiatric hospital building – many stories can be told about the school’s time there, some of them hair-raising. From its beginning with less than 100 students, under the leadership of Dr Kathleen Hinds, the college exceeded an enrolment of 500 within 12 years and has often been over-subscribed during the last two decades, with an enrolment today of 700 students. Staff and students enjoyed moving into their new purpose-built site in 2009 and welcomed the arrival of OIPS in 2018.

What is the Integrated Ethos of Omagh Integrated Campus?

The integrated ethos of Omagh Integrated Campus means that everyone is fully included and fully valued. The Campus welcomes those of diverse religious beliefs and none, whilst building on a Christian ethos.

Integration means respecting yourself and others, even when they have different beliefs from yours. We have high standards, asking that everyone works and learns to their full potential, helps those around them to do their best too, and develops into a thoughtful, caring member of her or his community.

Integration creates a positive learning environment where pupils and students grow together in reasonably balanced numbers from the two major traditions and, equally, reflecting the many diverse cultures that live within Northern Ireland today.

What does integration involve?

  • Excellence for everyone.
  • A positive environment where students learn together and respect each other.
  • A safe and caring community.
  • Strong staff- pupil/student relationships.
  • Understanding that happy children learn better.
  • Quality teaching for all, including those with special needs, gifts and talents.
  • Celebrating personal best and fostering self-esteem.
  • A Christian ethos embracing diverse religious beliefs and none.
  • High academic standards and behavioural expectations.
  • All cultures, all abilities, all nurtured, all valued.

The Omagh Integrated Campus offers a model and a vision of how education should be delivered across Northern Ireland. Here’s to the as-yet-unwritten chapters of this exciting story.
